Psychiatric Evaluations and Diagnostic Clarity

Mental Health concerns don’t always fit into a neat little box. You may be dealing with mood swings, overlapping symptoms, changes in your perception, or a persistent feeling that something is “off” without knowing why.

Skip the generic checklist medicine practiced by nationwide mental health apps’. You deserve a comprehensive evaluation from a Board-Certified Psychiatrist (a medical doctor with 4 additional years of mental health specialty training) who can accurately assess your unique situation and prescribe a real, evidence-based solution. At Northstone Psychiatry, we know we aren’t simply treating a ‘diagnosis’, we’re treating you.

We offer readily-available, confidential video appointments that fit into your schedule and we can send same-day prescriptions to your pharmacy. We’re proud to be one of the few physician-led practices that accepts all major insurance plans, and appointments are often available within days.

Common Questions About Psychiatric Evaluations

If you have any other questions, see our main FAQ page.

It is a relaxed, thorough conversation, not a stressful test or anything to prepare for. We will discuss your current symptoms, your medical history, and your goals for treatment. Unlike a 15-minute primary care visit, we take the time to understand the ‘whole picture’ of your life, ensuring that any diagnosis we make is accurate and any treatment plan fits your specific needs.

While therapists and psychologists provide counseling, a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor and licensed physician who then completed an additional 4 years of residency training specializing in treating mental health conditions, including depression and other mood disorders. Psychiatrists are fully licensed to prescribe all medications, make any diagnosis, and perform any therapy.

“Board-Certified” Psychiatrists have done all of this and then sought additional credentialing by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, to ensure the absolute highest standards, experience, knowledge and credentialing of any mental health provider anywhere. And yes, when you book with Northstone, you’ll see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist.

If you have been in therapy or other treatment but feel stuck, or if your symptoms are not fully responding to your current treatment, or if you’ve developed brand new symptoms – seeing a medical doctor ensures you are getting the professional answers and evidence-based treatment you deserve.

Yes. You do not need to diagnose yourself before booking an appointment – that’s our job. Think of a Psychiatric Evaluation as a comprehensive health check for your brain. We act as medical detectives, listening to your symptoms and history to untangle whether you are dealing with anxiety, burnout, a mood disorder, or a physical issue mimicking mental health symptoms. In the off chance we can’t treat your specific concerns, we’ll gladly point you in the direction of someone who can.

In most cases, yes. Our goal is for you to leave your initial evaluation with a clear understanding of what is happening (a diagnosis) and an actionable plan to fix it. If medication is medically appropriate, we can send the prescription to your pharmacy immediately so you can start treatment the very same day.

Yes. Many of our patients come to us because they feel ‘stuck’ with their current treatment or feel their previous diagnosis was incorrect. And many times, we’ve found they’re right. We provide a fresh, unbiased medical review of your history and treatments/medications with a board-certified psychiatrist (a medical doctor with specialty training in mental health conditions) to see if adjustments – or a totally different approach – can finally bring you diagnostic clarity and relief.

Yes. We are Board-Certified Psychiatrists trained to treat complex mood disorders, including Bipolar II, Cyclothymia, and treatment-resistant depression. We carefully screen for these conditions during your evaluation to ensure you aren’t prescribed antidepressants that could make a mood disorder worse – a common mistake in general practice.

Yes. While therapy focuses on processing emotions and behaviors, a Psychiatric Evaluation is a medical appointment. We focus on the biological and neurological aspects of your mental health. While we support therapy (and often recommend it), our primary role is to identify and treat the physiological root of your symptoms, often using medication.

We often have appointments available within days. Unlike large hospital systems and other clinics where wait times can be months, we prioritize accessibility so you can get the diagnostic clarity and treatment you need when you actually need it. By the end of your first appointment, we’ll usually have your diagnosis and treatment plan prepared.

We’re proud to offer full and comprehensive 60-minute psychiatric evaluations. If your visit doesn’t require this much time you may be done sooner, but we prefer to offer each new patient a full 60 minute time slot.

Yes. Unlike many specialized psychiatry practices that are cash-only, we believe the highest-quality medical care should be available to all. We are in-network with and accept major insurance plans (including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UHC/Optum and others) to cover the cost of your psychiatric evaluation and all follow-up appointments, making expert diagnostic care accessible and affordable.

Why this matters: We believe that mental healthcare should be both high-quality and accessible to all. Not taking insurance often means $500+ psychiatric evaluations and $300+ follow up visits every month. Although this is profitable for other clinics that refuse to take insurance, these ‘cash-pay’ clinics bypass standard medical oversight and lack basic accountability. To make matters worse, providers at these out-of-network cash clinics aren’t even required to maintain basic board-certification.

At Northstone Psychiatry, we believe elite medical care is defined by clinical excellence, not high fees. By maintaining in-network status, we adhere to the rigorous quality standards required by major health systems. This ensures that when you book with Northstone, you’ll receive safe, physician-led diagnosis and treatment from a board-certified psychiatrist – often for as low as $0 depending on your plan.

First, when you book with Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll see a real doctor: a licensed, board-certified psychiatrist who completed medical school and an additional four years of residency training specializing in mental health conditions. Having the expertise required to distinguish between different symptoms and their causes is essential to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. By choosing Northstone you’ll put your treatment in the hands of a doctor with the highest qualifications, training, knowledge and experience.

Second, we are a truly local physician-owned company. Unlike the other “big box” nationwide telehealth chains that are funded by corporate interests, offer ‘one-size-fits-all’ psychiatric evaluations and treatments while switching your provider every other visit, we’re able to bring direct physician-to-patient care personalized to you and your unique concerns.

Third, we are able to offer you a fast, easy and convenient experience with telepsychiatry. No waiting weeks or even months for treatment. No dealing with traffic, waiting rooms and inconvenient appointment times. Whether you’re at home, at work, or even out of town, we can see you at a time that is convenient for you through any phone, tablet or computer and give you a diagnosis and treatment plan the same day. We strive to be very flexible with appointment times and can often schedule visits in the evenings or later if needed.

Finally, we offer a truly empathetic and patient-centered approach to our care. We want to get to know the real you, so we listen first and talk second. Mental health concerns are complex and can look different for everyone – we take the time to ensure you get the right diagnosis and the right treatment from day one.

It’s very simple, we promise. You don’t need to download any software or apps, make phone calls, mail in old records or even be good with technology.

Step 1 – Book an appointment at a time convenient for you

Step 2 – Before your appointment, we’ll email or text you a secure link. Just click that link from your phone, tablet or computer and you’ll be connected directly to your provider in a private, HIPPA-compliant video room

Step 3 – Talk to a board-certified psychiatrist. We’re approachable, easy to talk to and here to listen. We’ll give you the diagnostic clarity you need and formulate a treatment plan the same day – and can immediately send medications directly to your pharmacy if needed.
