Overview

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)

True OCD is far more than just being neat or organized. It’s an exhausting cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts often followed by intense urges to perform behaviors to make them stop. Whether you struggle with physical checking, contamination concerns, mental loops or any other presentation, OCD is a distinct condition that standard ‘stress-relief techniques’ and anxiety treatments may not help. As a result, effective OCD treatment often requires unique medications, specialized treatments and different dosages compared to standard anxiety treatment.

At Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll always see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with the highest level of expertise and qualifications to ensure you get the correct, evidence-based treatment the first time. Don’t leave your quality of life to guesswork from an unqualified provider – book today and get the specialized care required to finally quiet your mind. We’re In-Network with insurance providers in NC and appointments are often available within days.

Common Questions About OCD Treatment

If you have any other questions, see our main FAQ page.

Yes. These are called ‘intrusive thoughts,’ and they are a classic symptom of OCD. And having them doesn’t mean you’re a bad or dangerous person. The fact that these thoughts disturb you is actually proof that you do not want to act on them (this is medically known as being ‘ego-dystonic’).

We understand that OCD attacks the things you care about most. We provide a judgment-free medical space to treat the anxiety and distress these thoughts cause, and reduce the frequency and severity of the obsession and compulsions, not to judge the content of the thoughts themselves.

While anxiety is general worry, OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) is characterized by a cycle of Obsessions (unwanted thoughts) and Compulsions (rituals or mental checks done to neutralize the fear). If you find yourself needing to repeat tasks, constantly seek reassurance, or review events in your head just to feel ‘okay’, you may be dealing with clinical OCD, which requires a different treatment protocol than standard anxiety.

At Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist with the highest degree of knowledge, training and expertise in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and related anxiety disorders, so you can be confident that you’ll have the correct diagnosis and treatment plan.

If you truly have OCD and the symptoms are negatively impacting your life  – then yes. Medication is often the cornerstone of OCD recovery. Research shows that OCD responds best to specific serotonergic medications (often at different doses than used for anxiety or depression) to reduce the ‘stickiness’ of intrusive thoughts. This helps lower the volume of the mental obsession so you can resist the compulsion and actually benefit from therapy.

While therapy is good for support and learning coping strategies, medications can correct the underlying chemical imbalances (such as serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine) that can cause persistent obsessions and compulsions. As board-certified psychiatrists, we evaluate your specific symptoms to determine if OCD medication is necessary to help you find true relief. If necessary, we are also able to prescribe controlled/scheduled medications for immediate relief.

While therapists and psychologists provide counseling, a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor and licensed physician who then completed an additional 4 years of residency training specializing in treating mental health conditions, including OCD and related anxiety disorders. Psychiatrists are fully licensed to prescribe all medications, make any diagnosis, and perform any therapy.

“Board-Certified” Psychiatrists have done all of this and then sought additional credentialing by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, to ensure the absolute highest standards, experience, knowledge and credentialing of any mental health provider anywhere. And yes, when you book with Northstone, you’ll see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist.

Standard ‘talk therapy’ can sometimes make OCD worse if the therapist accidentally provides reassurance (which feeds the cycle). As psychiatrists, we focus on the biological foundation – stabilizing your serotonin levels so your brain can stop ‘looping.’ If therapy is needed, we recommend ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), the gold-standard therapy for OCD.

If you’ve tried therapy but feel stuck, or if your symptoms are not fully responding to talk alone, seeing a medical doctor ensures you are treating the biological root of your OCD.

We often have appointments available within days. Unlike large hospital systems or other clinics where wait times can be months, we prioritize accessibility so you can get the treatment you need when you actually need it.

While we can often get you an appointment within days, OCD medications can sometimes take several weeks to reach their full effect. However, many patients feel a sense of relief simply by having a diagnosis and a clear path forward. And if necessary, we can also prescribe controlled/scheduled medications for more immediate relief.

Yes. In fact, many patients with OCD find telepsychiatry more effective. Because we meet you in your home environment – where your specific anxieties, thought loops, triggers and rituals actually happen -we can get a more accurate picture of your daily symptoms than we would in a sterile office. This allows us to fine-tune your medication and treatment plan to work where you actually live. Anything a psychiatrist can do in an office can be also done through video, including therapy, prescribing medication, or ordering tests if needed.

Many patients with OCD also prefer to avoid the stress of driving to an unfamiliar clinic at an inconvenient appointment time, finding parking and sitting in a waiting room. Our secure, HIPAA-compliant video visits allow you to receive expert medical care from the privacy and comfort of your home at a time that is convenient for you.

Yes. OCD can be debilitating, and you should not have to pay out-of-pocket for essential medical care. Unlike many specialized psychiatry practices that are cash-only, we believe the highest-quality treatment for OCD should be accessible. We are in-network with and accept major insurance plans (including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UHC/Optum and others) to cover your psychiatric evaluations as well as all follow-up appointments.

Why this matters: We believe that mental healthcare should be both high-quality and accessible to all. Not taking insurance often means $500+ new patient appointments and $300+ follow up visits every month. Although this is profitable for other clinics that refuse to take your insurance, these ‘cash-pay’ clinics bypass standard medical oversight and lack basic accountability. To make matters worse, providers at these out-of-network cash clinics aren’t even required to maintain basic board-certification.

At Northstone Psychiatry, we believe elite medical care is defined by clinical excellence, not high fees. By maintaining in-network status, we adhere to the rigorous quality standards required by major health systems. This ensures that when you book with Northstone, you’ll receive safe, physician-led treatment from a board-certified psychiatrist – often for as low as $0 depending on your plan.

First, when you book with Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll see a real doctor: a Licensed, Board-Certified Psychiatrist who completed medical school and an additional four years of residency training specializing in OCD and other related mental health disorders including OCPD, GAD, and anxiety-adjacent disorders. OCD is frequently misdiagnosed as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, leading to ineffective treatment. At Northstone, we know the difference and screen specifically for OCD subtypes (including ‘Pure O,’ contamination, and checking). We understand the nuance of dosing medication for OCD specifically, ensuring you get a treatment plan that actually targets the neurological loop of the disorder.

Second, we are a truly local, physician-owned company. Unlike the other “big box” nationwide telehealth chains that are funded by corporate interests, offer ‘one-size-fits-all’ depression treatments and switch your provider every other visit, we’re able to bring direct physician-to-patient care personalized to you and your unique concerns. With Northstone, your OCD treatment will be in the hands of a medical doctor with the highest qualifications, training, knowledge and experience in treating mental health conditions.

Third, we are able to offer a fast, comfortable and convenient experience with telepsychiatry. No waiting weeks or even months for treatment. No dealing with traffic, waiting rooms and inconvenient appointment times. Whether you’re at home, at work, or even out of town, we can see you at a time that is convenient for you through any phone, tablet or computer and begin your OCD treatment the same day. We strive to be very flexible with appointment times and can often schedule visits in the evenings or later if needed.

Finally, we offer a truly empathetic and patient-centered approach to our care. We want to get to know the real you, so we listen first and talk second. OCD is a complex disorder and every person has unique symptoms. We’re here to understand you and help you feel better, never to judge.

It’s very simple, we promise. You don’t need to download any software or apps, make any phone calls, or have old records mailed in.

Step 1 – Book an appointment at a time convenient for you

Step 2 – Before your appointment, we’ll email or text you a secure link. Just click that link from your phone, tablet or computer and you’ll be connected directly to your provider in a private, HIPPA-compliant video room

Step 3 – Talk to a board-certified psychiatrist. We’re approachable, easy to talk to and here to listen. We’ll put together a treatment plan for your OCD and can send same-day OCD medications to your pharmacy if needed.
