Overview

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is more than just painful memories, it’s a physical response causing your body’s alarm system to be stuck in the “on” position. This can cause flashbacks, sleepless nights, feeling anxious and irritable, trigger avoidance and many other symptoms. Living with PTSD can feel like fighting a war that ended long ago; you’re constantly living in ‘survival mode’ which drains your energy and steals your peace.

Because trauma actually changes the brain’s chemistry, getting better isn’t a matter of willpower, it requires medical stabilization. At Northstone Psychiatry, our Board-Certified Psychiatrists have the expert training and qualifications to treat PTSD as the biological injury that it is. We use evidence-based medical treatments to dampen the hyperactive “fight-or flight” response, creating the stability you need to finally heal.

Northstone Psychiatry not only prioritizes fast and confidential access to care, we also accept all major insurances. Don’t sit on a waiting list for months to finally be seen by someone who doesn’t have the highest qualifications and expertise to truly treat your PTSD – book today to speak with a licensed, board-certified psychiatrist and get same-day prescriptions sent to your pharmacy. Appointments often available within days.

Common Questions About PTSD Treatment

If you have any other questions, see our main FAQ page.

No. We move at your pace. Our priority in the initial evaluation is understanding your symptoms (like nightmares, panic, or avoidance) and formulating the most appropriate treatment, rather than forcing you to relive the traumatic event itself. As psychiatrists, our first goal is to stabilize your nervous system and help you feel safe again. We will never push you to share more than you are ready to handle.

PTSD has specific markers that go beyond general anxiety. These often include flashbacks (feeling like the event is happening again), avoidance (staying away from reminders of the event), and hyper-vigilance (always being on edge). Poor sleep, anxiety, irritability are other symptoms that are related to PTSD but can have other causes as well. As Board-Certified Psychiatrists, we’re medical doctors that are trained to distinguish between Generalized Anxiety Disorder and PTSD to ensure you get the correct diagnosis and treatment plan. This is essential to your stabilization and recovery.

Medication is often a crucial tool to optimize PTSD recovery because trauma changes the brain’s biology. We can prescribe targeted treatments to suppress nightmares, lower physical hyper-arousal, calm your anxiety, and restore serotonin levels. This ‘turns down the volume’ on your symptoms, giving you the mental space and energy needed to heal.

While therapy is good for processing emotions, medications can correct the underlying physiological imbalances that can cause PTSD symptoms which helps turn down your ‘fight-or-flight’ response. As board-certified psychiatrists, we evaluate your unique symptoms to determine which specific medications, if any, are necessary to help you feel like yourself again. If needed we’re also able to prescribe controlled/scheduled medications to improve sleep and anxiety control.

While therapists and psychologists provide counseling, a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor and licensed physician who then completed an additional 4 years of residency training specializing in treating mental health conditions, including PTSD and other anxiety and trauma-related disorders. Psychiatrists are doctors that are fully licensed to prescribe all medications, make any diagnosis, and perform any therapy.

“Board-Certified” Psychiatrists have done all of this and then sought additional credentialing by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, to ensure the absolute highest standards, experience, knowledge and credentialing of any mental health provider anywhere. And yes, when you book with Northstone, you’ll see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist.

If you have been in therapy but feel stuck, or if your PTSD symptoms are not fully responding to talk alone, seeing a medical doctor ensures you are treating the biological injury that trauma can leave.

Yes. In fact, many PTSD patients find telepsychiatry more effective because it allows them to attend appointments from the safety and comfort of their own home. You avoid the stress of driving in traffic, parking, getting to an appointment on time and sitting in a crowded waiting room, which can all be triggering for those with high vigilance.

It’s no surprise that show telepsychiatry is just as effective as in-person care for diagnosing and treating PTSD. Anything a psychiatrist can do in an office can be also done through video, including therapy, prescribing medication, or ordering tests if needed.

We often have appointments available within days. Unlike large hospital systems or other clinics where wait times can be months, we prioritize accessibility so you can get the treatment you need when you actually need it.

While we can often get you an appointment within days, certain PTSD medications can sometimes take 2–6 weeks to reach their full effect. However, other PTSD medications work quicker than this to get quick relief, and patients feel a sense of comfort from simply getting a diagnosis and a clear plan. We will monitor you as closely as needed to ensure you are on the fastest path to recovery.

Yes. Effective trauma treatment should not cause a financial burden. Unlike many specialized psychiatry practices that are cash-only, we believe the highest-quality medical care should be accessible. We are in-network with and accept major insurance plans (including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UHC/Optum and others) to cover your psychiatric evaluations as well as all follow-up appointments.

At Northstone Psychiatry, we believe elite medical care is defined by clinical excellence, not high fees. By maintaining in-network status, we adhere to the rigorous quality standards required by major health systems. This ensures that when you book with Northstone, you’ll receive safe, physician-led treatment from a board-certified psychiatrist – often for as low as $0 depending on your plan.

First, when you book with Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll see a real doctor: a licensed, board-certified psychiatrist who completed medical school and an additional four years of residency training specializing in PTSD as well as other mental health conditions that mimic PTSD. Having the expertise required to distinguish between the causes of trauma-related symptoms is essential to ensure proper treatment. By choosing Northstone, you’ll put your PTSD treatment in the hands of a doctor with the highest qualifications, training, knowledge and experience.

Second, we take a medical, trauma-informed approach. While therapy is important, untreated biological symptoms (like insomnia, nightmares, irritability and constant panic) can make therapy impossible. We focus on treating the physiology of your trauma first, by getting you sleeping again, reducing flashbacks and calming your fight-or-flight response, so you can actually benefit from the rest of your recovery journey.

Third, we are able to offer you a fast, comfortable and convenient experience with telepsychiatry. No waiting weeks or even months for treatment. No dealing with traffic, waiting rooms and inconvenient appointment times. Whether you’re at home, at work, or even out of town, we can see you at a time convenient for you through any phone, tablet or computer and begin your PTSD treatment the same day. We strive to be very flexible with appointment times and can often schedule visits in the evenings or later if needed.

Finally, we offer a truly empathetic and patient-centered approach to our care. We want to get to know the real you, so we listen first and talk second. PTSD is complex and can look different for everyone. We take the time to distinguish PTSD from other conditions (like anxiety, panic disorder, or phobias) to ensure you get the right diagnosis and treatment from day one.

We keep it simple, we promise. You don’t need to download any software or apps, make phone calls or mail anything in.

Step 1 – Book an appointment at a time convenient for you

Step 2 – Before your appointment, we’ll email or text you a secure link. Just click that link from your phone, tablet or computer and you’ll be connected directly to your provider in a private, HIPPA-compliant video room

Step 3 – Talk to a board-certified psychiatrist. We’re approachable, easy to talk to and here to listen. We’ll put together a treatment plan for your PTSD and/or other mental health concerns and can send same-day PTSD medications to your pharmacy if needed.
