Common Questions About Depression Treatment

If you have any other questions, see our main FAQ page.

Depression is often a biological condition, not just a ‘state of mind.’ While therapy is good for processing emotions, medication can correct the underlying chemical imbalances (such as serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine levels) that can cause persistent low mood. As board-certified psychiatrists, we evaluate your specific symptoms to determine if medication is necessary to help you feel like yourself again.

We use an evidence-based approach to determine if prescription treatments (like SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, MAOIs, stimulants or other treatments) are right for your specific symptoms and brain chemistry. As licensed physicians, we are able to prescribe any and all medications that may be effective in treating your depression. If necessary, we are also able to prescribe controlled/scheduled medications.

Yes. We believe the highest-quality medical care should be accessible. We are in-network with and accept major insurance plans (including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UHC/Optum and others) to cover your psychiatric evaluations as well as all follow-up appointments.

Why this matters: We believe that mental healthcare should be both high-quality and accessible to all. Not taking insurance often means $500+ new patient appointments and $300+ follow up visits every month. Although this is profitable for other clinics that refuse to take insurance, these ‘cash-pay’ clinics bypass standard medical oversight and lack basic accountability. To make matters worse, providers at these out-of-network cash clinics aren’t even required to maintain board-certification.

At Northstone Psychiatry, we believe elite medical care is defined by clinical excellence, not high fees. By maintaining in-network status, we adhere to the rigorous quality standards required by major health systems. This ensures that when you book with Northstone, you’ll receive safe, physician-led treatment from a board-certified psychiatrist – often for as low as $0 depending on your plan.

You do not need to be at ‘rock bottom’ to deserve medical care. Many high-functioning people suffer from milder cases of depression, dysthymia (persistent depressive disorder) or ‘smiling depression,’ where they perform okay at work, home or school but feel empty or exhausted inside. If left untreated, these milder forms of depression can sometimes progress into more severe mood changes over time. If your mood is impacting your quality of life, it is worthy of treatment.

While therapists and psychologists provide counseling, a Psychiatrist is a medical doctor and licensed physician who then completed an additional 4 years of residency training specializing in treating mental health conditions, including depression and other mood disorders. Psychiatrists are fully licensed to prescribe all medications, make any diagnosis, and perform any therapy.

“Board-Certified” Psychiatrists have done all of this and then sought additional credentialing by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, to ensure the absolute highest standards, experience, knowledge and credentialing of any mental health provider anywhere. And yes, when you book with Northstone, you’ll see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist.

If you have been in therapy but feel stuck, or if your symptoms are not fully responding to talk alone, seeing a medical doctor ensures you are treating the biological root of your depression.

Yes. Studies show that Telepsychiatry is just as effective as in-person care for diagnosing and treating depression and mood disorders. Anything a psychiatrist can do in an office can be also done through video, including therapy, prescribing medication, or ordering tests if needed.

Many patients with depression prefer this to avoid the hassle of driving to an unfamiliar clinic at an inconvenient appointment time and sitting in a waiting room. Our secure, HIPAA-compliant video visits allow you to receive expert medical care from the privacy and comfort of your home at a time that is convenient for you.

We often have appointments available within days. Unlike large hospital systems where wait times can be months, we prioritize accessibility so you can get the treatment you need when you actually need it.

While we can often get you an appointment within days, antidepressant medications can sometimes take 2–6 weeks to reach their full effect. However, many patients feel a sense of relief simply by having a diagnosis and a clear plan. We will monitor you closely during these first few weeks to ensure you are on the fastest path to recovery.

First, when you book with Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll see a real doctor: a licensed, board-certified psychiatrist who completed medical school and an additional four years of residency training specializing in depression as well as other mood disorders such as persistent depressive disorder, major depressive disorder, adjustment disorder with depressed mood, bipolar disorder and many others. Having the expertise required to distinguish between these causes of low mood and understanding your unique symptoms is essential to ensure proper treatment. By choosing Northstone you’ll put your treatment in the hands of a doctor with the highest qualifications, training, knowledge and experience.

Second, we are a truly local physician-owned company. Unlike the other “big box” nationwide telehealth chains that are funded by corporate interests, offer ‘one-size-fits-all’ depression treatments and switch your provider every other visit, we’re able to bring direct physician-to-patient care personalized to you and your unique concerns.

Third, we are able to offer you a seamless, accessible and convenient experience with telepsychiatry. No waiting weeks or even months for treatment. No rushing through traffic, waiting rooms and inconvenient appointment times. Whether you’re at home, at work, or even out of town, we can see you at a time that is convenient for you through any phone, tablet or computer and begin your depression treatment the same day. We strive to be very flexible with appointment times and can often schedule visits in the evenings or later if needed.

Finally, we offer a truly empathetic and patient-centered approach to our care. We want to get to know the real you, so we listen first and talk second. Depression is complex and can look different for everyone – from sadness and lethargy to irritability, low energy and brain fog. We take the time to distinguish clinical depression from other conditions (like Bipolar Disorder or thyroid issues) to ensure you get the right diagnosis and the right medication from day one.

It’s very simple, we promise. You don’t need to download any software, install anything or even be good with technology.

Step 1 – Book an appointment at a time convenient for you

Step 2 – Before your appointment, we’ll email or text you a secure link. Just click that link from your phone, tablet or computer and you’ll be connected directly to your provider in a private, HIPPA-compliant video room

Step 3 – Talk to a board-certified psychiatrist. We’re approachable, easy to talk to and here to listen. We’ll put together a treatment plan for your depression or mood disorder and can send same-day depression medications to your pharmacy if needed.
